Huge Ceiling Fans

I saw huge fans like this in one of the secondary schools halls in Singapore about a year ago.

A few days ago, I realize they are appearing at the Al Fresco dining area at 313@Somerset too!



The weather is so warm these few days. These fans sure come in handy!

What a $50 million face-lift does...

It was then known as the Singapore Power building.
After a $50 million face-lift, it is now known as the TripleOne Somerset.

It has a huge candy shop, cafe and a supermarket - Fairprice Finest.
I like the supermarket best ;-)

Ulu Pandan Incineration Refuse Plant.

On 11 August 2009 last year, this incineration plant ceased operation. The plant has burnt our rubbish for a good 30 years. If you are interested to read more, you can read it here.

The chimney that you see in this photo, it's 1.15 kilometers high!

I am wondering how they are going to dismantle it? Or is it going to be kept for memories? ;-)

Cnergy at Old Toh Tuck Road

This CNG (Compressed Natural Gas) station at Old Toh Tuck Road is the largest in the world. It has been the biggest since it opened in September 2009.

When they mention largest it's the most number of CNG nozzles. If it's number of CNG stations, it is in Pakistan.

In Memory of Ben Mok - Pedal On...

I have been wanting to take this photo since last month. I finally took it yesterday. You probably have read it in the newspapers.

Ben was struck down by a drunk driver. A fine young life ended at a tender age of 35.

No Studying Allowed...

Many students in Singapore will be having their exams soon.
Wherever you can find places to sit, they will be there.

One popular place that students like to gather is fast food restaurants like in this photo.


But something really looks wrong. ;-p

The trees are flowering....

Many trees are flowering all over Singapore. Singapore's version of 'sakura'. ;-)

I saw this and just had to take a photo of it.
Look at the ground. It's full of the red flowers too!



I am not sure what the species of this tree is though. Do you?

Digging and drilling 24 hours.....

I walked past Beauty World Plaza and saw this machine piling. Look! It's so near the building!
Oh.. the poor folks working or staying in that building, all the inconvenience and the noise.



Work on this Beauty World Staion on the Downtown Line is on 24 hours shifts too!
They do take a break though. They rest on Sunday nights.

Usually for huge projects like this, either Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel will be filming the project progress. I wonder which company is doing it for this Downtown Line project?

I enjoy watching them on TV. Eg Extreme Engineering on Discovery or National Geographic's Megastructures.  For this project, I wonder how long is the wait before it's finally aired on TV.

Singapore Indoor Stadium

This is one building in this area that's not be slated to be demolished. This is the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

If you are a fan of Selina, Hebe and Ella, more commonly known as S.H.E., you would most probably bought tickets for their concert at 8 pm tomorrow at this Indoor Stadium.

But if you only found out after reading this and want to meet S.H.E, you can head down to the Stadium MRT Station just next to the stadium to meet them at 1 pm tomorrow!



After so many years of buying event tickets from SISTIC (sistic.com), I only found out what SISTIC means a few weeks ago!

SIS stands for Singapore Indoor Stadium Ticketing! How many of you know that?

What can't they wait for?

For the Circle Line to open! Took a sneak peak at their Open House the other day. It's so convenient to get to Suntec City and Millenia Walk now. I walked out from the Promenade Station and it was at the entrance of Suntec City where Carrefour is!

I realise that the mall is giving out Coffee, Ice-Cream, Popcorn this weekend at the entrances of both Esplanade and Promenade Station from 11am - 7pm.



For me, I am waiting for the other unopened stations! I think they will only be open next year. I still got to wait!

National Stadium...

Another building in Singapore that's soon to be demolished. It will make way for the Singapore Sports Hub, the project has been delayed a few times.

Let's see when they will finally pull this grand dame down and replace it with a Sports Centre that will most probably be mostly occupied by shops and restaurants. It's so predictable for buildings in Singapore.



This stadium was opened to the public way before I was born!

Kallang Theatre

Happened to walk pass and realise Kallang Theatre is still around!
It had ceased operations since 31 March 2007 after the 'durian' was in operation for about 5 years.



I think many locals have memories of this place.

- Long long ago, the NUS Convocations were held.
- National Day Rally speeches were held there too.
- Les Misérables was also performed there with subtitles!

What's your story about this place?

I wonder if they are going to open up this place again? The new Circle Line Stadium Station is just next to it! It's so convenient to get there now!

Queenstown Community Library

This is the Queenstown Community Library.

With the National Library at Stamford Road closed on 31 March 2004 and subsequently demolished, this is currently the oldest library in Singapore.



How often do you visit the library?
I visit it once every two weeks. (Why? To return my library books and get new ones.)

I have a premium membership so I can borrow up to 8 books at one time.
I borrow all kinds of books! Can you guess the titles of the books I borrowed these 2 weeks?

The Old Fence...

Can you guess which building this old fence and gate was for?
Hint: It's located near the current National Museum of Singapore.




What is this lady thinking about?  Momo was probably thinking that when she was a little girl, she used to walk pass this gate.

CC2 Bras Basah Station

Many people do not know that this "pool of water" just opposite the Singapore Arts Museum is the 'roof' of the Bras Basah Station below!




It lets natural light in to the station below. It will definitely save on lighting cost for this station!
As the sun's ray passes through the water, it creates a rippling effect below.




Bras Basah translated into English means Wet Rice. Do you think the lines in the water feature resembles a 'modern look' paddy/rice field in the first photo above?




This station won the World Architecture Festival - World Transport Building of the Year under the Transport category in 2009.

CC6 on the Circle Line - Stadium Station

On the Circle Line MRT Line, most stations are BORING!
There are exceptions though. One of the nicer station is "CC6 - Stadium".

Doesn't it look really sleek from the outside?




The long curvy structure and the choice of materials used, don't you think it looks like some modern art gallery?




It's also one of the few stations with really high ceilings.

Does the prints on the tall glass looks familiar?
I thought they look similar to the ones on Nestle Milo tins, do you also think so?

Is it able to handle the crowd when there are events at the stadiums outside?At least with lots of people inside, you won't feel claustrophobic. :-)




I don't think I will use the Circle Line often. I am waiting for the Downtown Line to be ready.

Light at the end of the 'circle line' tunnel

Two days ago, there was a sneak peak of the 11 stations along the Circle Line that will be open on 17 April 2010. The event was called the Circle Line Discovery.

I was there with thousands of curious people, all wanting to see how the stations will look like. We also got to see how the tunnels looked as the tunnel lights were switched on.

This photo is taken inside the first/last carriage of the train.



We saw light at the end of the tunnel! (ya I hear you say that's so corny...)

This is at the Dhoby Ghaut station, which is the first station of the line, and it has the station code "CC1".

Quest for Immortality @ National Museum of Singapore

It was the last day of the "Quest for Immortality" exhibition at National Museum of Singapore yesterday.

I had a free entrance ticket (the special gallery costs $15 to enter usually) and thought I should use it since it is the last day of the exhibition. When I got there, there were long queues everywhere!

It was the Museum Open Day and all the different galleries were free for all! Everyone was there for the freebie day. (My free ticket was useless! It was free for all!)

I SMS my cousin and let her know and she and her dad came too!

The queue to this particular gallery was long. Even MediaCrop TV crew were there to interview the public.
I like the expression of the little boy!




When we left the National Museum, we saw the queue was all the way out to the road outside!
