February Theme: When People Think of My City (Singapore) ...

It's the 1st of the month again! That means it is Theme Day for the Daily Photo bloggers round the world. This month's theme is: When People Think Of My City ....

What comes to your mind when you think of Singapore?

This collage is made up of certain pictures that is unique to Singapore.

Left: The Communications Tower at Changi Airport, home to Singapore Airlines.

Top Right: Merlion, one of the icons used to represent Singapore, widely used in tourism brochures. In the background, one of the most iconic Arts Theatre in Singapore. Hidden behind the merlion, the tallest hotel in Singapore.

Centre: The Singapore Flyer, opening this month! A ride on it gives you a bird's eye view of Singapore and also neighbouring countries!

Bottom Left: Food! Chilli Crabs is one of the food creation that originates from Singapore. This is not the chilli version, but the famous "Crab Bee Hoon" also very popular here. Foodies will love Singapore for the round the clock eating!

Bottom Right: Students in this region and also round the world, covet a place at the National University of Singapore (NUS). You find the finest brains teaching, researching, working and studying here. Not only a brainiac place, but also a place of sports excellence and an arts hub!

Other than those mentioned above, when Singapore is mentioned, what comes to your mind? Do you know it's also one of the busiest financial centre in the world?

  1. Kero - I have "visited" Singapore many times, and the thing I am most familiar with is ...the transit area at Changi airport. Duty free shops, the transit hotel, the rooftop pool...the world's best airport, home to the world's best (and my favourite!) airline. I will be renewing my acquaintance again later ther this year.

Well, actually, I have ventured beyond the confines of the airport a couple of times, and some of the other highlights are Raffles, the fantastic metro, the cricket pitch, the Merlion, and....the signposted "long grass areas" on the road ... to the airport.

  2. What a great post! I'd love to ride the Singapore Flyer. Can't wait to see the wonderful photos you'll take from it.

What else comes to mind... Development, prosperity, success...

A wonderful February to you too, Keropokman.

  3. Well, I didn't expect you to post a picture of Karen Tan and HMV. You know that's what I think of. :)

But I can't wait for the Eye to open on March 1.

  4. Great post! I think the one thing I associate with Singapore is the Communications Tower.

I hope I'll be able to see it in person one day as well as ride on that Singapore Flyer! :)

  9. For me Singapore means Raffles (by that I mean the original Raffles, not the hotel as it is now). Jurong Bird Park which I adore. Changi airport, one of the truly great airports of the world. Orchard road. And all those amazing places where you can eat communally and choose from dozens of little stalls. Oh and the Satay Club...after all that, I miss Singapore! And the cricket club. And Little India, and and and...oh the bullet train - Singapore is just wonderful!

Your choices are more modern - except the food, which sounds wonderful!

  10. it is a pleasure for me to see such a well-made collection of pictures from a beautiful city I have never visited. Someday...

The web site of our local newspaper did a little feature on my blog today and yours gets a mention and a link! Check out http://www.stltoday.com/blogzone/virtual-st-louis/virtual-st-louis/2008/02/a-labor-of-love-a-photo-a-day-from-st-louis/

Those crabs really seem to have gotten the attention of the journalist.

  11. Haha... nice to see that.

From my experience, when speaking to most foreigners about Singapore, the first thing most people talk about is Singapore Airlines. Everything else depends on individual experience, but the rest do come up at times.

Actually I am quite proud of that, because at least we are very well known for some thing. It is very much better than people whom ask me is Singapore next to China.

Good captures! Nice collection. Have a great weekend.

  26. Forgive me! I didn't get around much on Theme Day, but I want to remedy that now with a visit. I enjoy your commentary. I think of a too-short visit to your city on my way to Thailand, the Raffles Hotel, Singapore Sling, and best of all, the marvelous food. Also the scary announcements about punishments for infractions before landing at the airport!

  27. I dont know Singapore, but when I think of itt I think of a bustling city with the crowds of tourists.
